FAQ
Clear answers to the questions small‑business owners ask most.
If you’re considering working together, this page will help you understand how I approach External Finance Director work, Major Decision Analysis, and Growth Strategy.
Do you replace my bookkeeper or CPA?
No. I work with your bookkeeper and CPA, not instead of them.
They handle compliance, taxes, and accurate records.
I prepare cash flow forecasts, help you interpret the numbers, evaluate decisions, and understand the financial impact of what’s ahead.
What do you actually do as an External Finance Director?
I help you understand what’s happening financially, what’s coming next, and what decisions matter most. Your bookkeeper records the past. Your CPA handles taxes. I help you make decisions with confidence with working capital management, cash flow forecasting, budgeting, long term planning, pricing, timing, and the financial impact of what’s ahead.
How is this different from a fractional CFO?
Fractional CFOs often drop in for a project, build dashboards, or deliver reports and charts. My work is ongoing and decision‑focused. I’m here to help you interpret the numbers, evaluate options, and understand the financial consequences of each path – not just repackage your data.
Do you work with small businesses or only larger ones?
I work with owners who are growing, making decisions, and feeling the weight of those decisions – whether they’re at $300K or $3M. If you’re making choices that affect cash, people, or the future of the business, you’re the right size.
What if my books aren’t perfect yet?
That’s normal. You don’t need perfect books to start making better decisions. We’ll work with what you have, and I’ll help you identify what needs to be cleaned up over time – without slowing down your momentum.
How often do we meet?
We video conference regularly – usually every week – and stay in touch between sessions as questions or decisions come up. The goal is to give you ongoing clarity, not one‑off advice.
What if I already have reports and dashboards?
Reports tell you what happened. Dashboards show you numbers. My work helps you understand what those numbers mean and uses them to look to the future and what decisions they support. You don’t need more data. You need clarity, interpretation, and direction.
Do you help with pricing decisions?
Yes. Pricing is one of the most important financial decisions you make. I help you understand margins, capacity, demand, and the long‑term impact of raising or holding prices. The goal is to price with confidence, not guesswork.
Can you help me understand my cash flow?
Absolutely. Cash flow is where most owners feel stress, especially during growth. I provide you with a consistently updated cash flow forecast. I help you see what’s coming, what’s tight, and what decisions will improve your cash position over the next 30–90 days.
What if I'm not good with numbers?
You don’t need to be. My job is to translate the financial side of the business into clear, practical language so you can make decisions without feeling overwhelmed. You bring the business. I bring the clarity.
Do you help with hiring or team decisions?
Yes. Hiring affects cash, capacity, and timing. I help you understand the financial impact of adding people, adjusting roles, or shifting responsibilities – before you make the decision.
Do you help me plan for the future, or just understand what's happening now?
Both – but the real value is in looking ahead. Understanding today’s numbers matters, but the decisions that shape your business happen in the future. I help you see what’s coming, model different paths, and understand the financial impact of each choice before you make it.
Can you help me forecast cash flow?
Yes. Cash‑flow forecasting is one of the core parts of my work. We look at timing, inflows, outflows, and the decisions that affect your cash position over the next 30–90 days. The goal is to reduce surprises and give you confidence about what’s ahead.
Do you help with long‑term planning, or just short‑term cash flow?
Both. Short‑term cash flow keeps the business stable and reduces your stress. Long‑term planning helps you grow intentionally. I help you understand how decisions today affect the next 6–18 months hiring, pricing, capacity, investments, and the financial shape of your future.
What if my business is changing quickly?
That’s exactly when forecasting matters most. Rapid growth, new opportunities, or shifting demand all affect cash, timing, and risk. We model different scenarios so you can make decisions with clarity instead of reacting under pressure.
Do you help me understand the financial impact of decisions before I make them?
Yes – that’s the heart of the work. Every decision has a financial consequence. I help you see the impact ahead of time so you can choose the path that supports your goals, cash flow, and long‑term stability.
How does Major Decision Analysis work?
For high‑stakes decisions – buying a business, opening a location, adding a service line, major equipment purchases – I provide a focused, one‑time analysis. We look at the upside, downside, timing, cash flow impact, and long‑term implications so you can make the decision with clarity instead of pressure. It’s a deep dive designed to help you understand the future before you commit.
How do I know if this is the right fit?
If you’re making decisions that affect cash, people, or the future of the business – and you want clarity before you commit – this is usually a fit. A short conversation is the easiest way to understand where you are, what’s ahead, and whether this is the right support for your goals.
